Born Baptist and Mexican, Plinio was born again in a north American evangelist church at 13, then again at 15, and at 17. Then quitted reborning to become an artist only to find similar disappointments. His work can be seen as a series of strategies to overcome loosing his faith in both religion and art.

The little drawings and sculptures “the objects i´ve lost”, “sent questions”, “DESEO catalog” and “stolen” are all object based self-portraits which represent higher transcendental questions related to pain, loneliness, doubts and desires with a personal and humoristic point of view. They can be interpreted as metaphors between the physical and metaphysical, the secular and the divine.

His paintings, in the other hand, represent empty spaces such as the corners of his studios in Mexico and Belgium; the walkways of the airports he passes when traveling; and the floors of museums and churches around the world. These paintings require the presence of the viewer; they explore perception between the bi-dimensional and three-dimensional. The spectator reaches a level of contemplation and tranquility getting immersed in an unavoidable meditation. A blissful void.

With the videos like “Me gusta estar en tu casa” (I like being at your house) he explores systems of faith in which he grew up. A capturing mixture of learning and pleasure. A joyful child is dancing gospel music concentrated on copying the movements of her tambourine teacher.

“Jedes Dasein sheint in sich rund” (Every being is in it self round) is panoramical painting of the interior of St. Baafs cathedral in Gent. The surface is a hemisphere made at the exact size of the artist hanging at his eyelevel. This work is complemented with the panoramical painting of the MARTa museum inside a telephone booth in Herford, Germany. Both are attempts to bring down the impalpable content of a church or museum to a human scale by means of representation.

Plinio creates a contemporary iconography for a personal faith, his own barrack in the supernatural world and the art world.

Nacido bautista y mexicano, Plinio renació en una iglesia evangelista norteamericana a la edad de 13 años, luego una vez más a los 15, y a los 17… Después renunció a seguir renaciendo para convertirse en artista sólo para encontrarse con decepciones similares. Su trabajo artístico puede ser visto como una serie de estrategias para sobrellevar su perdida de fe en la religión y en el arte.

Las series de pequeños dibujos y esculturas  “the objects i´ve lost” (los objetos que he perdido), “sent questions” (preguntas enviadas), “DESEO catalog” and “stolen” (robados) son todas una especie de autorretratos basadas en objetos que representan mayores preguntas existenciales relacionadas con el dolor, la soledad, las dudas y los deseos desde un punto de vista muy personal y con cierto grado de humor.
Pueden ser interpretadas como metáforas entre lo físico y lo metafísico, entre lo secular y lo divino.

Sus pinturas, por otro lado, representan espacios vacíos como las esquinas de sus estudios en México y Bélgica; los pasillos de los aeropuertos por los que pasa en sus múltiples viajes y los pisos de museos e iglesias que visita en diferentes partes del mundo.
Estas pinturas requieren la presencia del espectador dentro de ellas. Son pinturas que exploran la percepción entre lo bidimensional y lo tridimensional. El espectador alcanza niveles de contemplación y tranquilidad quedando inmerso en una inevitable meditación e introspección. En un vacío dichoso.

Con obras en video como “Me gusta estar en tu casa” el explora los sistemas de fe en los que creció. Una cautivante mezcla de aprendizaje y placer. Se puede observar una escena de una niña bailando y disfrutando música cristiana ‘gospel’ concentrada en copiar los movimientos de su maestra de pandero.

“Jedes Dasein sheint in sich rund” (Todo ser es en si mismo redondo) es una pintura panorámica del interior de la catedral de Gante en Bélgica. Su superficie es una semiesfera construida exactamente a la medida del artista colgando al horizonte de sus ojos. Esta obra se complementa con la panorámica del museo MARTa dentro de una cabina telefónica en Herford, Alemania. Ambas son intentos de acercar el impalpable contenido de una iglesia o museo a una escala humana por medio de la representación.

Plinio crea una iconografía contemporánea para una fe personal, su propia barricada en el mundo de lo supernatural y el mundo del arte.

 Geboren als baptist en als Mexicaan, werd Plinio op 13-jarige leeftijd in een Noord-Amerikaanse, evangelistische kerk herboren, later opnieuw op 15- en op 17-jarige leeftijd. Hij stopte hiermee om kunstenaar te worden maar hij vond enkel soortgelijke ontgoochelingen. Zijn werk kan beschouwd worden als een reeks strategieën om zijn geloofsverlies in religie zowel als in kunst te overwinnen.

De kleine schetsen en sculpturen zoals “de dingen die ik verloren heb”, “verzonden vragen”, “DESEO catalogus” en “gestolen” zijn allemaal zelfportretten gebaseerd op objecten. Deze zelfportretten geven bovenzinnelijke vragen weer die betrekking hebben op pijn, eenzaamheid, twijfels en verlangens vanuit een persoonlijk en humoristisch opzicht.

Ze kunnen opgevat worden als metaforen tussen het materiële en het bovenzinnelijke, het wereldlijke en het bovenaardse.
Anderzijds geven zijn schilderijen lege plaatsen weer zoals de hoeken van zijn studio’s in Mexico en België; de wandelgangen van luchthavens waar hij passeert als hij reist; en de vloeren van museums en kerken over de hele wereld. Deze schilderijen vereisen de aanwezigheid van de bezichtiger; zij bestuderen de waarneming tussen het bi- en drie-dimensionale. De waarnemer bereikt een niveau van bezinning en rust terwijl hij ondergedompeld wordt in een onvermijdelijke meditatie. Een zalige leegte.

Hij bestudeert de geloofsmethoden waarin hij opgroeide met video’s zoals ‘Me gusta estar en tu casa’ (‘Ik vind het fijn in jouw huis te zijn’). Een boeiende mengeling van leren en onspannen. Een opgewekt kind danst gospelmuziek terwijl het geconcentreerd de bewegingen van haar tamboerijnleraar kopieert.

Plinio creëert een eigentijdse iconografie voor een persoonlijk geloof in de bovennatuurlijke wereld en de kunstwereld.
